Shave Me! 3.1

0
0

Shave Me! is a strange game in which you need to crop beards and make a smooth a shave as possible.

Armed with just a disposable razor and some tissue, your job in Shave Me! is to shave off all the hairs on screen without cutting the skin. If you do happen to make a cut you need to dab the blood with bits of tissue to clean it.

Shaving in Shave Me! is done simply by dragging your finger up and down the screen to control the razor. It's pretty disgusting and the novelty aspect of the game soon fades as it gets very repetitive. After all, who enjoys shaving anyway?

There's very little variety in Shave Me!, aside from the way you can choose the skin and hair color of the face. However, an in-app purchase is available that lets you upgrade your toolset to include an electric razor, tweezers, shaving cream and hair-gro.

Although it's quite amusing for a while, the drudgery of Shave Me! soon kicks in and you'll probably end up disposing of it like a cheap razor.

Gangstar Vegas 1.0.0

Gangstar Vegas is a thrill-a-minute action game set on the mean streets of Sin City. It's the fourth in Gameloft's series of GTA-style open world games and the biggest of the lot so far.

Same old story

In Gangstar Vegas you star as a prize fighter who upsets a mob boss and must run for his life, before seeking to get his own back. It's an age-old tale and there's little originality in the way the story played out in Gangstar Vegas. The main character's personality feels a bit wooden and the script is pretty clichéd (some of the characters that appear are good fun, though). However, that doesn't mean that Gangstar Vegas isn't fun to play - quite the opposite, in fact.

Thrills and spills in Sin City

The game world in Gangstar Vegas is immense - incredibly it's nine times bigger than the previous game, Gangstar Rio. There are 80 different missions to complete in total, and they vary considerably in terms of gameplay, from prize fights to chasing bad guys on foot, to participating in street races. There are many challenges in Gangstar Vegas in which you can compete against others in online leaderboards.

The Quick Play mode in Gangstar Vegas allows you to part in one-off challenges, such as heists, brawls, survival and time attacks. It's great to be able to dive straight in and play in this way, especially if you've been away from the game for a long time and want to brush up on your skills before heading back into the main story.

The setting of Vegas makes for lots of fun, whether it's chasing bad guys down the strip at high speeds, or playing blackjacks in the casinos to earn more cash. As you play, you'll realize just how much there is to explore in Gangstar Vegas and the level of detail in the game world is impressive.

There are plenty of weapons to collect and upgrade in Gangstar Vegas, including guns, grenades, molotovs, flamethrowers, and baseball bats. The shop also allows you to change your look with new clothes, hair cuts, or even a chipmunk mask! Of course, you can buy vehicles as well, and the selection is very varied, covering everything from mopeds and trials bikes to monster trucks and tanks.

Taking to the streets

The controls in Gangstar Vegas are much the same as previous versions of the game. You walk around using an on-screen directional pad and there are action buttons for running, shooting, and interacting with objects.

The driving controls can be set up according to what you find easier, allowing you to choose between tilt, arrows or stick-based steering. What's great is that you can define different control systems for cars and bikes, so you could use arrow-based steering for cars and tilt-based for motorcycles if you like.

There's the ubiquitous city map, which shows you where missions are and displays various points of interest. Generally you can skip straight to a mission in Gangstar Vegas without having to drive to the start point, which is handy. A mini map in the corner of the screen shows your current position.

Viva Las Vegas

The graphics in Gangstar Vegas are very good, and rival those of the mobile versions of GTA III or Vice City. The city of Las Vegas is brought to life with an incredible level of detail and it really drags you into the story. Animation is great too and the accurate ragdoll effects make performing stunts a real treat. There are the occasional graphical glitches as with most huge games like this, but not enough to detract from the overall experience.

The characters look good, although the voice acting is poor in places. Be warned that bad language and adult themes litter the dialog, so Gangstar Vegas is certainly not suitable for children, and is classified accordingly.

Just like GTA, Gangstar Vegas features in-car radio, and the range of stations seems very heavily influenced by the Rockstar game series. There's some quality tunes licensed though, with something to suit everyone.

The verdict

Gangstar Vegas borrows so much from Grand Theft Auto that you'll forget it's a totally different game series. Of course, this is no bad thing and Gangstar Vegas is so big and deep that you'll struggle to find a better sandbox action for mobile - GTA included.

Real Boxing 1.5.0

0
0

Real Boxing takes a swing but doesn't fully connect in this beautiful, but mediocre game for iOS.

It's no K.O.

Real Boxing aims to deliver a console-quality boxing game on a mobile device with mixed results. After a tutorial that teaches the basics of boxing, you create your boxer. The basic customization options are all cosmetic (e.g. hair color, shorts, tattoos) and won't affect gameplay. Your boxer's ability is determined by three factors: strength, stamina, and speed. The categories can be improved by training at the gym through simple, but not particularly interesting mini-games that require you to tap on screen at the correct time. In order to train more, you have to compete in more fights or through inapp purchases.

The game starts out strong and the early fights are enjoyable to play, however the game quickly loses momentum as you progress further in the career mode. It's not long before opponents are far too strong and can knock you out with one punch while barely taking any damage because your opponents have slightly higher speed, stamina, or strength ratings. The sloppy controls (see below) add to the frustration. To beat superior opponents you must have a near-perfect fight which detracts from gameplay and realism.

Real Boxing also offers multiplayer mode where you can challenge other boxers from around the world. Unfortunately, there appeared to be server issues and depending on the continent you choose, you might not be able to find players to fight.

How to play

Your boxer can throw right and left jabs, hooks, and uppercuts.Real Boxing is based around timing your swipes. Which you hand you punch with is determined by the direction you swipe. There is also a block button and a dodge button to protect your boxer. However, taking three consecutive punches while blocking will stun you and timing your dodge wrong could mean a K.O. Health can be restored by touching a lock up button that appears and tapping the screen as quickly as possible.

As mentioned above, the controls in Real Boxing can be unresponsive: sometimes left jabs don’t register and the dodge button doesn't always respond and sometimes you’ll get clobbered by a right uppercut when you meant to weave out of the way.

How it looks

The graphics in Real Boxing are outstanding and easily the high point of the game. Boxers begin to sweat and cuts and bruises appear as they take more damage and the fight lasts longer. Movements are fluid and this game looks like it belongs more on a console than a mobile device or tablet. The game also has an impressive soundtrack: hip-hop is played while your boxer enters, you can hear your boxer's heartbeat when his health is low, and sound effects such punches sound crisp. Unfortunately, spectacular visuals and quality sound only make up for so many of the games shortcomings.

The Verdicts

Despite beautiful graphics, Real Boxing punches below its weight due to frustrating controls and multiplayer issues.

Mermaid's Newborn Baby Doctor 1.0.0

I’m honestly at a loss as to what Mermaid's Newborn Baby Doctor is meant to be. It oscillates between a mindless “pet” game in which you have to deliver and care for a baby mermaid, and a simple mini-game collection - but there is no meaningful link between the two.

I thought mermaids laid eggs

With a clear focus on the kids market, the main thrust of Mermaid's Newborn Baby Doctor is to nurse a prospective aquatic-mother through the late stages of her pregnancy, deliver the child, and then get them both home looking stylish.

Each of the seven stages of this process require you use items located at the bottom of the screen to carry out procedures in a mechanical, set order. There is no creativity to this, with the game dictating all of your actions, actions that get oddly detailed. Whether you are drawing the mermaid's blood to check it under the microscope or clamping the umbilical cord before cutting it, you have to wonder exactly where these acts feature in most children's understanding of childbirth. You could say that it’s educational but, if that’s the case, mer-dad is conspicuously missing from the baby making process.

Nurse pass me the syringe (it’s under the Arkanoid)

It doesn’t take long for Mermaid's Newborn Baby Doctor's conspicuous free-to-play nature to become apparent. There are the ever present ads for toe-curling similar products (Foot Spar Kid's Games, anyone?) that fill the whole screen at regular intervals. Then there are the in-app purchases, which lock the final tool on each stage of the mermaid’s journey and which must be earned or bought to progress. So, while you may be able to bathe the mer-kid and wash its hair, you can't clean its belly button to progress the game without playing a mini-game to unlock cotton buds.

In theory this isn’t a bad thing, as it proves to be the most play-filled part of the game. The eight mini-games are dull but varied – including the Wackamole and Arkanoid clones. There seems to be no link between these and the baby/mermaid theme though, which feels like a missed opportunity. It would have taken much, something as simple as turning the Flappy Bird clone into Flappy Fish could have made the whole thing feel more cohesive.

Under the C (minus)

The whole thing is just mundane. None of the mini-games really inspire you to revisit them, making the need to replay them when you are unsuccessful at unlocking a required item truly frustrating. Add to this the app’s regular crashes, plus the thematic inconsistency, and you are left with a shell of a game.

Mr Jump 1.0

0
0

On first impressions Mr Jump looks like another endless runner. A game that’s sole purpose is to establish its simple premise before letting you dash forward through its randomly generated, yet oddly repetitive, challenge. It quickly becomes evident, however, that Mr Jump is something else. While it is an auto-runner, it is filled with tightly designed levels, and an evolving challenge that keeps you having to constantly hone your skills.

Inspired by the greats

Where similar games keep throwing newly formed, untested levels at you, Mr Jump's developer has clearly gone out of its way to ensure each stage of the little hero’s journey has been perfectly tweaked to match the growing complexity.

This is evident from stage one, in which the blocky Mr Jump must dash through a grassy environment, reminiscent of Mario's world 1.1 or Sonic's Green Hill Zone. A single tap has him do a little hop, while holding the screen causes a longer arching jump. Every hillock, hole, and spike is placed just so, allowing you to run at the fixed challenge again and again. When you fall you know that it is your fault, and to rub salt into the wound it tells you exactly what percentage of the course you had managed to complete.

Evocative environments

Finishing a stage delivers you to a new world with new challenges. In the case of the second, darker swamp area this means tiny diamonds that must be landed on to allow you to perform a second jump, enabling hair-raising bounce-combos over otherwise impossibly long gaps. Even this develops across the game’s multiple, carefully crafted levels, rolling in mechanics such as Flappy Bird's constant taps to fly and vanishing platforms.

All of this retro, auto-running action is well matched to the bold pixel art graphics and chirpy music which only further exemplify the love and effort that has clearly been lavished upon Mr Jump. Despite their simplicity, these elements blend together well to create a sense of place for each tiny level that is strangely evocative.

Super Mr Jump

The moral of the story is not to judge a game by its icon, because Mr Jump is far from just another cookie cutter experience. Expertly combining its various mechanics together across masterfully constructed stages, this auto-runner is a cut above the majority of the competition.
